Aspects and Transits

Aspects are the angles the planets form to each other as they move through heavens. They are considered either "favorable" or "unfavorable" according to how harmoniously the two planets in aspect function together. The favorable aspects are angle relationships based on division of a circle by three. The unfavorable aspects are those based on a division of a circle by two.

Again, however, it is not any one aspect, itself, that is better or worse than any other, but how that aspect is felt and manifested by the individual or a society. Unfavorable aspects are credited with moving the world forward and for fostering a deep-seated need to improve oneself. The seven major aspects are listed and defined below.

Conjunction

A conjunction occurs when planets come together. This produces a blending of planetary energies that is not, in itself, unfavorable. Only if one of the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto closely conjuncts one of the personal planets, Mercury, Venus, or Mars, or the Moon does the individual feel difficult energy. This is because some otherwise personal aspect of life is conjoined with an impersonal and often extraordinary energy. Other planets make easy pairings, such as Venus and the Moon or the Sun and Mars.

Squares

A square produces a "fight" between planets, with each planet wanting control and direction over the energies of the other planet. There is always a feeling that something is right and something else is wrong. The square produces friction and conflict. This often manifests itself as nervousness, edginess, and restlessness. The way to resolve the conflict is to accept each planetary influence on its own ground as a valid statement and allow the conflict to continue, if necessary, but without taking sides. Squares have the capacity of compelling tremendous growth.

Oppositions

Oppositions indicate a "stand-off" where it is impossible for two planets to function simultaneously. Note that there is no fight here, but a complete inability for both to function at the same time. When one planet functions, it gives up the opportunity to work with the energies of the other. For example, when the Moon and Sun are in opposition, the conscious and unconscious energies oppose each other. When one acts, the other can't contribute any of it's own unique energies. They will often have the same mission or goal, but the vibrations each use to accomplish that end are radically different and diametrically opposed.

Trines

Trines harmonize the functioning of different planets so that they "sympathize" with each other; they are "kindred spirits." When one is called forth to work, the other can aid it. This is particularly beneficial when the aspect of the planets is otherwise antagonistic, but there are times when this effect is too subtle and mild to be consciously appreciated. In this case, it's the same as always being more willing to count our woes than our blessings.

Semi-Sextile

The semi-sextile connects two planets in a way so that they are quietly working with each other. The strength here is not monumental, and it seems to indicate that the two energies affect each other indirectly.

Sextiles

Sextiles are based on a division of three and two, and indicate a sympathetic partnership between planets which, however, may demand some conscious attunement in order to function. With trines one rests on one's laurels, but with sextiles one either uses the laurels, or doesn't get any benefit at all from them.

Quincunx

This aspect is also known as an "Inconjunct." The influence of the Quincunx is very subtle, but often more powerful than the square or opposition aspect. When a quincunx occurs between planets in a horoscope, the individual feels that the functions of these two planets is somehow in opposition, yet requiring synthesis. The attempts of the individual to harmonize these forces produce a strain which is particularly distinctive. The individual is constantly attempting to unity these energies, but never quite succeeds. The effect is frustrating, grating, and abrasive, yet unless specifically pointed out, the individual may not even be aware that it's happening. The only solution is not to try harder at solving the problem consciously, but to leave it alone. The individual must bow his head in service to the two planets in aspect, and give up any conscious solution to the problem.

The transit of a planet is its passage by ephemeral motion in any year as shown by the ephemeris. Transits are important in two ways. First, it is significant when a transiting planet forms an aspect of a similar nature with a planet it aspected at birth. Second, when a transiting planet comes into aspect with progressed planets which are forming an aspect, it will set off their influences before the date when they would act, themselves. In the case of aspected planets separating from an aspect, a transiting planet coming into aspect may prolong or revive that waning influence.

Sun

Sun transits are times when we are often in the public spotlight and are times when we are recognized for our accomplishments. They're also the times when we expect the pat-on-the-back or some other type of special attention. Sun transits include our birthdays.

Moon

When the moon is transiting, we act and react from an emotional point of view. We're operating on intuition and instinct during these times, and are better able to unconsciously sense what's going on around us.

Mercury

Mercury transits are generally very busy periods in whatever are of life Mercury is transiting. Again, Mercury rules communication, so this transit is concerned with communication of all kinds including conversations, letters, email, and even short trips. It's not unusual, since Mercury rules dualities, that we find events and situations coming at us in two's, as well.

Venus

Since Venus rules money and financial rewards, we're often on the receiving end of such during her transits. These transits are friendly periods of time when interests turn to socializing and enjoying good food and surroundings.

Mars

Mars transits are active, restless, and can make people cranky and accident-prone. It is possible to use this energy to one's advantage, however. This is an excellent time to start something that needs a decisive, definite, strong push to start moving forward.

Jupiter

Jupiter transits bring about moods where we want to do anything but the ordinary. We want to try something new, go someplace we're never been before, learn something we've only touched on in the past. People feel bold and lucky during this transit, and very often quite expansive with time, friendship, and monies.

Saturn

Saturn transits deposits reality right back in our lap, however. These transits test the energy of the house or planet it is transiting. This is a time of testing one's knowledge, willpower, perseverance, and self-discipline. It's not a great time to start something new, but the energies can be turned to your advantage by using them to stop a bad habit or break out of something that's not beneficial to you.

Uranus

Expect the totally unexpected during Uranus transits. These are often times when people pass into and out of your life at break-neck speeds. Their purpose seems merely to jolt you out of your rut and show you what you're missing.

Neptune

Neptune transits are times of philosophy and dreams. Sensitivity heightens during these transits, compassion deepens, and the Spirit is open to all Nature has to say. It's analogous to Samhain and Beltane, when the Veil between the Worlds is thinnest.

Pluto

Pluto transits deal with obsession, regeneration, and change. These transits see the old, the broken, the outdated, the unnecessary in your life pass away from it. These transits call for us to show strength and strength of character. They also warn us to be quiet and listen, for they'll show us what and who we really are. Like Saturn transits, these are not fun times. There can be power struggles, frustrations, disappointment, stubbornness, and depression. But if we can let go and accept the losses, then the changes can point us to what plans to make for the future.
