The Element of Earth

Earth is the foundation of all elements. While it's the one we are most familiar with, it's also the element we most tend to take for granted, since everything we do is done upon it. Therefore, it rules the most mundane aspects of our lives; working, playing, sleeping, eating, gardening, and raising families. In magickal workings, it rules spells and rituals based on business, employment, money, stability, fertility, and prosperity in all its forms.

Even though this element is concerned with things of the mundane world, it should not be looked upon as negative-based. All things that Earth rules are needed and necessary for life to exist; it is the element upon which all others rest. It is foundation, balance, perseverence, and focus. It is the manifestation of the idea in the material world, building a solid foundation for the next idea conceived of in the East.

It is the most stable of elements, the symbol of successful completion and the foundation on which the future is built. But taken to extremes, it is also inertia, resistance to change, unreasoning stubbornness, and a lack of imagination or vision for the future. The positive emotions of Earth include a sense of security, confidence in your own strength, an ability to completely ignore minor sources of irritation, the ability to see the task or situation through to the end, and the ability to focus and concentrate.

Earth rules the Northern Quarter, the place of greatest darkness and winter. It's a feminine element; nurturing, moist, and fruitful. It's color is green, and it governs tree, knot, and stone magick.
